Climate Change
Climate change is a change in climate due to Co2 and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by a process called the green house effect.
During the day, the sun shines through the atmosphere. The earth's surface warms up in the sunlight. At night, it cools & releases the heat back into the earth. This is called the green house effect. However, some of the heat is trapped by green house gases in the atmosphere. The green house effect is getting stronger due to gases being produced by vehicles, airplanes, engines and fossil fuels. This warms the earth up even more & prevents gases from escaping. This is known as global warming. If nothing is done to change this, it can have devastating effects.
Our planet is like a Greenhouse
The suns rays warm the earths surface. The Earth reflects this energy in the form of heat, which some is returned to space.
Greenhouse Gases keep the rest of the heat in, but we are upsetting the balance.Greenhouse gases come from Mineral Oil, Coal, Natural Gas, Deforestation, Methane, NOx and Industrial Gases.Mineral oil is a leading source of heat but also a main source of CO2 and accounts for 40% of emissions from fossil fuels. Oil is used in vehicles, aircraft and power stations. Coal is a big culprit as oil. Natural gas is more efficient but still emits half as much CO2 as coal. One fifth of our CO2 emissions are a result of deforestation.
How it all Began...
Since the start of the industrial age, the earth has experienced a steady rise in temperatures. This been mainly to a rise in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from burning fossil fuels and deforestation. While GHGs, such as Carbon Dioxide, are part of a natural cycle of life on earth,it is the sharp increase in such GHGs that is a major concern with regards to climate change.
The Carbon cycle...
All living things are made of carbon.Carbon is also part of the ocean, air and rocks.Because the earth is ad dynamic place, the earth does not stay still. In the atmosphere, carbon is attached to a oxygen in a gas called Carbon dioxide.Plants use carbon dioxide and sunlight to make their own food and grow. The carbon becomes part of the plant.Plants that die and are buried may turn into fossil fuels made up of carbon e.g coal and oil. When humans burn fossil fuels, most of the carbon quickly enters the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a Greenhouse gas and traps heat in the atmosphere. Without carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, the earth would be a frozen world.
Global warming...
Global warming is when the earth heats up(the temperature rises). It happens when greenhouse gases e.g carbon dioxide, water vapour, nitrous oxide and methane trap heat and light from the sun in the earth's atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This hurts many people, animals and plants. many cannot take this change, so they die.
What is Global warming doing to the environment?
Global warming is affecting many parts of the world. Many things that are happening to the ocean are linked to global warming. The pollution that causes global warming is linked to acid rain.Acid rain gradually destroys almost everything it touches.Global warming is also causing many fires that wipe out whole forests.
What causes Global Warming?
Many things cause global warming. One thing that causes global warming is electrical pollution. Electricity causes pollution in many ways, some worse than others. In most cases, fossil fuels are burned to create electricity. Fossil fuels are made up of dead plants and animals e.g. oil and petroleum. Many pollutants (chemicals that pollute the air, water, and land) are sent into the air when fossil fuels are burned. Some of these chemicals are called greenhouse gases.
How can we help stop Global warming?
1. Do not throw out rubbish on the floor.
2.Do not use deodorant sprays.
3.Do not dump waste into the rivers.
4.Do not throw dead animals into rivers.
